Reply with quote | #1 | Hi, been a while since I am on (very busy getting not much done) I got my regular flu shot in early Sept (8th or 9th). Wound up sick the last week of Sept/beginning of Oct. Doc's think maybe is was "a flu"- not sure which (there are many) [it was not a "cold"- trust me] No one seems to know whether one should take the "you know which flu" shot or not. I am a big believer in the seasonal flu shot. What are your thoughts and ideas? Have your docs said yes or no or maybe? sign me: Curious |

I just saw you post Lin cause I haven't been on here for a while. It got so that there isn't anyone on here any more. Sorry to hear that the flu shot gave you the flu. I can't decide if I want to take it or not because of that reason but I guess I will. Roy |

Reply with quote | #3 | Hi Folks! As always, I'm still here. Same old job. Still searching and very frustrated and tired. Things have changed around here and I'm really sick of it. I don't plan on getting a flu shot and never have. My doc told me that my immune system is so screwed up already the flu shot might not be a good thing. That's fine with me. The less shots the better. What works for one doesn't for others. We know that more than anyone. I've been searching for dental insurance. At my last cleaning my dentist said I need 3 crowns and 3 fillings. I've taken care of one filling $85 and have an appointment to take care of the other two. The crowns $800 each I can't afford. I've always tried to stay up to date on my 6 month cleanings but still doesn't seem to matter. I saw something on the Internet that isn't dental insurance but a dental discount plan which I was dumb enough to give them my debit card number for the first monthly payment of $39.95. It sounded so good, pay 60% of dental work fillings, crowns, root canals and I could go to my dentist. Come to find out I can't use my dentist unless he agrees to the program. He doesn't accept this program because they pay up to nothing for the dental services and I would be paying out the rest. So if I'm paying $39.95 a month to them and 40% anyway it didn't seem right. Plus checking with BBB noticing too many complaints. I just don't like it and nobody seems to recognize Careington Care. I was told I have 30 days to cancel with a full refund and I've already called to let them know I want to cancel. They said I have to wait 10-15 business day to receive my packet and the information to cancel will be in it. I'm worried, I hope I didn't make ANOTHER stupid mistake. I trusted Ditech when refinancing and they didn't get me the rate they promised and still wanted to charge me. Only because I filled a complaint with my credit card company did I get it back. This time I used my debit card. I'm gonna go to my bank today and see what they say. Talk Soon Diana

Reply with quote | #4 | Hi Roy and all, I did not get sick or a flu from the seasonal flu shot. I got "something" about 2 1/2 -3 weeks AFTER I got the "seasonal flu shot". I did feel very TIRED and a bit fever-ish the day after I had that seasonal flu shot, but I did work a full day. I got that "maybe some sort of flu- illness" way after I got the shot. What ever it was- I am 99.99% sure was from a little kid I worked with on a Thursday who coughed and sneezed and wiped boogas on me and then the mom said: Oh my husband and older child are home sick with something since Tuesday and I am not feeling so well either.... So- It was NOT THE SHOT! |

Reply with quote | #6 | Update..............I received my packet, mailed the letter to cancel as they request and they received it 10/23, have assigned a cancel number and just waiting for the reimbursement dept. to credit my account. Been checking now for help on these crowns but no luck. I've called everywhere from the dental college to clinics and either they don't do crowns or I make too much money. Go figure on a Secretaries salary. You have to be on welfare or aid to get any help. What my dentist wants is similar to others and if I go to someone else they want $200 for an exam and X-rays so I think I've wasted enough time. I'll just get them done as I can, if I can. I'll just die toothless with a big smile on my face. Talk Soon Diana |

Reply with quote | #7 | I have not gotten any kind of flu shot or vaccine for about 10 years. I have had MS for 20. I have always gotten the flu whenever I got the shot. The years I don't take the flu shot, I don't get the flu. I find it interesting that they tell people with lower immune systems to take the shot, MS is not a lower immune disease it is an overactive immune disease. I feel like I have enough illness- I don't need anyone to inject me with new exciting illnesses. I am also debating the Tysabri- I have been taking it for about five months and feel worse than I ever did. Is anyone else having the same issues?? Did anyone notice more spasms, more spasticity and other issues- like burning?? I feel like my back has been on fire a few days and not getting better. Any thoughts? Input? Thanks!! |

Reply with quote | #8 | Hi Sharon, I do not have personal experience with Tysabri. I, personally, am a big believer in the seasonal flu shot and preventative medicine/ treatment. The only year I did not get a "seasonal flu" shot was the year I got the flu and was down for the count/ sick as [blank] for over 4 weeks.... [and I was young, strong, healthy... about 8 years before dx with MS] If I was not living with my parents (my mom a nurse) I would have been ..... Now-a-days.... I would stay in line for 3+ hours for my seasonal flu shot... Don't think my body could stand having the flu what with a high and continued fever etc. Just MY opinion. |

James- I guess this thing ia just different for everyone. I also suppose that it depends on if you are working, at home etc. I do not go out too much anymore but I stay active- try to avoid people that may be sick and always use my hand sanitizer- does this make a difference? I surely do not know. |

Reply with quote | #10 | Hi Everyone Hope you are all feeling good. The weather has been great and I hope it last for awhile. Sharon, you said that you're feeling worse after taking the Tysabri. I don't take that but am on the Beta and I'm reluctant to give myself a shot because I know I need a day to re-coup. It makes my body ache and I need to be able to relax the next day. When I first started Beta it didn't make my body ache but it has been lately. Maybe I just got a bad batch. Talk Soon Diana |

For what it worth Sharon as most of you know I have been on Tysabri for over 2 years now. I took the flue shot last year as well as this year and I haven't had any trouble. I don't know if the Tysabri cause it or not but I do have a lot of trouble with spasms. Last spring I had a Baclofen Plumb put in. That has help a lot but I still take Baclofen in the pill form. The doctor said that it take time to get the plumb set to put out the right amount of Baclofen so my system will get use to it. Roy |

Reply with quote | #12 | Roy- That is actually my major concern. I have had a lot of symptoms with the MS, blindness, tremors, spinal tingling, burning sensations all over my spine and endless foot cramps and even had my Abdominal muscles lock up trying to get out of bed a bunch of times. Through all of this I never had pain in my legs or spasms in my legs or back. Now since the tysabri it has been agonizing, the leg pain and back pain are killing me and I don't even know if it will go away if I stop taking this stuff. The Dr told me these are just side effects, but I feel the quality of my life was better before. I am having such a hard time making this decision. I want to protect my brain and spine (obviously we all do) but at what cost to the rest of my body and life? I just don't know anymore. I am scared to keep it and scared not to!! |

Reply with quote | #13 | Sharon, I felt the same way when I wasn't able to afford the Beta Injections. Scared I wasn't gonna have something to stop the pregression of this monster. Luckily the manufacturer helped me. I'd try one of the other meds? Maybe Beta will be good for you. I know when first diagnosed doc put me on Avonex and it was the worst. In bed for days aftet the shot. Let us know what happens. Good Luck! Talk Soon Diana |

Reply with quote | #14 | Diana- Thanks for your response. I was on all the ABC drugs, my body would not tolerate them at all either it took days to get myself up and going. Amazing because without the drugs I feel better and do more. Maybe it is the whole psychology behind it as well. Anyway, I will work with it one day at a time until I can figure it out!! Thanks to one and all for your advice and input It is much appreciated!! |
